Buck Island, Corolla, Wild Horses & Beachin’ Fun

Beachin’ Fun is located in the gated community of Buck Island. This private and wonderfully managed community hosts many amenities often found only at larger resorts. A large community pool, and hot tub are open seasonally. Two tennis courts (also lined for pickle ball) are open year-round. Beachin’ Fun is a short walk to the private Buck Island beach access with bathrooms and a snack hut. Just as close are many public amenities such as Food Lion, Whalehead Brewery, sushi, Big Bucks Homemade Ice Cream, and many other OBX stores and restaurants. These shops and restaurants are located in the Timbuck II Shopping Village and Monterey Plaza – which a very short walk from Beachin’ Fun.

Beachin’ Fun (formerly Twice the Fun) is a spacious and well appointed four (or eight!) bedroom vacation home (duplex) in the gated community of Buck Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Each side of this beautiful duplex can sleep as many as ten with four bedrooms – two with a king, one with a queen bed, plus a bunk room with four twin beds, all of which are located on the two lower floors with 3 1/2 baths. The main living space is found on the entire upper floor with balconies on both the East and West sides. The balconies on both the second and third floors are connected in the back by lockable gates so the two sides may be rented separately or as a single home with eight bedrooms, six full baths and two half baths! On the second level of each home is a private hot tub which is only available for guests. This home is perfect for a single family or several families who want some privacy. The amenities are perfect for a family or group of friends looking for an upscale get away location.

Buck Island and Beachin’ Fun are located just south of the historic town of Corolla, North Carolina. (want to sound like a local? Say co-raw-la not co-row-la!) Corolla has many attractions for the visitor including the famous (some say infamous) Whalehead Club, a beautifully restored 1920s-era Art Nouveau-style mansion-turned-museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places (pictured to the right). There are also quite a few restaurants and other attractions including the Currituck Beach Lighthouse where you can climb to the top of this structure keeping mariners safe since 1875.

You might think we have saved the best for last . . . and we have. Beachin’ Fun is just a short drive to the home of the famous wild horses of Currituck County. Any visit should include the opportunity for a remarkable encounter with the area’s oldest and most beloved residents, the Wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs. Stranded on the Outer Banks for centuries, but still enjoying the laid-back beach lifestyle, these feral and wild creatures are tolerant of the visitors who visit their beaches for the warm sun, cool waves, and miles of space. It’s because of this desolation, coupled with the help from the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, that the wild horses are able to thrive, relatively undisturbed by the limited development that has sprung up around them over the past 50 years.

A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required and for that reason it’s strongly suggested to book a tour with one of the many wild horse tour organizations. One of our favorites at Beachin’ Fun is Wild Horse Adventure Tours.
